Our Commitment to Community
The relationships we form spark ideas, provide sustenance in our professional and personal lives, and make the pursuit and attainment of goals worthwhile.
Making creative and innovative contributions to our communities in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, the Napa Valley, New York, and beyond is an important part of our firm's mission. We sponsor events for our profession and endow scholarships for the accounting departments of selected universities. Many of our partners and managers serve on boards of directors and chair committees for local foundations, professional organizations, and community relief and assistance organizations.
We are committed to empowering our employees to make effective and valuable contributions to our communities. We provide training for employees who are interested in serving on a non-profit board—including providing an overview of board member guidelines and responsibilities, and opportunities for involvement in local organizations. We also provide training for employees with previous board experience that is designed to enhance their skills and help them to deliver even greater value to the communities they serve.
Community Activities
Our partners, managers, and associates volunteer with organizations such as the CalCPA Financial Literacy program, the Foothill College Entrepreneur Center Business Plan Competition, the Cleantech Open Business Competition, and Junior Achievement. The firm provides associates to assist in reconciliations and year-end close of the financial records for The Health Trust and its 34 non-profit clients. The Health Trust is a charitable foundation providing a catalyst for community partnerships that identify health issues and work to find innovative solutions. We also participate as a company in community service projects, including the annual EMQ Families First holiday program, One Warm Coat Project coat and clothing drive, and food drives for Second Harvest, Redwood Empire. San Francisco and New York City Food Banks.

Volunteering at the VA Hospital (January 2011)
On Saturday January 22nd, a group of our auditors volunteered spent a few hours of their time with patients at the Veteran's hospital in Palo Alto, showing their gratitude and support for our veterans. Talking with an 86 year-old veteran of the Korean War for about 3 hours left a lasting impression on one associate, who later said "What I realized when I left the VA hospital is that my life would continue as normal with all the excitement of being a young professional and being active outside of work through exercise and social activities. Everyday will potentially be the same as the last for these veterans, but if an outsider choses to spend some time with those who selflessly fought for our country, it can brighten up their day."

Not-for-Profit Director Training (August 2010)
Local non-profit organizations have an ample need for people with financial expertise. Our not-for-profit board training helped to meet that need. All of our partners, managers, and associates were encouraged to participate in the training. Though individuals at the beginning of their careers may not necessarily be serving as a board member, we want all of our associates to begin thinking about how they can help their local non-profits. The training was led by a Senior Project Director from CompassPoint, a consulting, research, and training organization providing nonprofits with management tools, strategies, and resources to lead change.

June 2009 Annual Meeting
As part of our company's annual meeting this year we sought to expand community involvement and to contribute to local educational and humanitarian outreach programs. This year, rather than practicing the usual team building exercises we had done in the past; we chose to focus on the community and partner with the Red Cross.
We coordinated with the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter (www.siliconvalley-redcross.org) and received disaster training at a series of stations set up by them. Over the course of the afternoon, we learned first aid and CPR, met with local Red Cross disaster response workers on how to best respond to an emergency, learned how to put out a fire, and created over 100 Disaster Preparedness Kits. The disaster preparedness kits were donated to Community Options, a national non-profit organization that provides housing, support services, and advocacy assistance to help empower people with disabilities. The kits can be worn as backpacks and include items that an individual might need in the event of an emergency, such as an emergency solar/crank style radio, food bars, blankets, and basic first aid supplies. For more information about Community Options, visit www.comop.org.
